Comment on HELEN HUNT JACKSON – SEPTEMBER POEM by Chester Martin.
This was a delightful poem we learned in second grade at Anna B. Lacey school, Chattanooga, TN, in 1942. Miss Joberta Robertson was the wonderful teacher who taught it to us. I only remembered the lines about the asters by the brookside making asters in the brook, and am amazed that from such a fragment the whole poem can be brought back to life! Another poem I learned about the same time which was about autumn started with the line, “Come little leaves said the wind one day”. If you don’t know it you will love it. check it out.
